. now, in 2006, the junior senator from illinois, senator obama, came to the floor, made a very passionate and thoughtful statement here on the senate floor in opposition to raising the debt limit. many of the reasons that he gave then are relevant today. in fact, they are even more appropriate because the national debt is much, much higher. and we have a fiscal mess. it's instructive for my colleagues to hear the words straight from then-senator obama. he delivered these remarks on march 16, 2006. at that time the senate was debating raising the debt limit by $781 billion to a new limit then that seems very small today, about half what it is today, raising the limit of 2006 to $8.9 trillion. so i thought it would be worth for the president's benefit as well as our benefit to go over what then-senator, now-president obama had to say, and so i'm going to quote partially from his speech. and this is from 2006, dealing debate -- -- quote -- "the fact that we are here today to debate raising america's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. it is a sign that the u.s. government

senate judiciary committee will begin hearings on wednesday following president obama's suggestions to try to curb gun violence. some of his suggestions included universal background checks and ban on assault weapons. the president could face opposition from his own party. in alaska, arkansas and montana, they're up for reelection in 2014 and are unsure about the president's proposals. >>> the fate of a wrongful death lawsuit filed in the wake of the virginia tech shootings could be decided next month. three supreme court justices will hear appeals in the lawsuit. they'll decide whether the full court will take up the case. two victims' families filed the wrongful death suit against the commonwealth claiming their daughter could have survived if virginia tech warned the campus sooner. the jury found in favor of the famili families. a judge are upheld the decision but reduced the damage awarded. both parties filed appeals. >>> a large barge hit a bridge causing an oil spill in the mississippi river. officials with the coast guard have not said how much of the oil spilled into the river.

obama will outline his approach as we said tomorrow. he's going to las vegas. but senator marco rubio writes in an op-ed today, i'm quoting him, my hope is president obama will use his voice and influence to further this approach. however, if what he offers is a process for the undocumented that is more lenient, faster, and unfair to those waiting to come legally, it won't bode well for reform. that suggests there's a fight brewing already, doesn't it? >> it does, but i think it's more smoke than fire. the biggest difference that we were expecting to see between the senate proposal and the presidential proposal was a pathway to citizenship, and i was pleasantly surprised this morning when i saw that the senate proposal said that citizenship was an option. i don't think there's going to be a lot of fight in terms of the details. both republicans and democrats have come to the realization that we do have to be fair to those immigrants who have been here waiting in line. they may quibble about the details of the fine being $2,000 or $1,500, but ultimately the objective is the same of a f
